How to Change Headlight Bulbs on a Mercury Sable

The headlight bulbs in your Mercury Sable will eventually burn out because of the amount of heat generated in the thin coil of wire in the headlight. When this happens, you will lose visibility at night, which may cause unsafe driving conditions depending on where you are. Not only is it unsafe to drive with a burnt headlight bulb, but it can also attract law enforcement to your vehicle and give them an excuse to pull you over. To avoid these potentially serious situations, replace your headlight and rest assured that your vehicle is safe to drive.

  • Open the hood and prop it up.

  • Remove the electrical connector attached to the rear of the headlight.

  • Remove the rubber protector cap from the headlight housing. The rubber cap is used to insulate the bulb and ensure dust does not enter the housing.

  • Push the metal clip downward to release the headlight bulb and remove the bulb.

  • Insert the new bulb into the headlight and push the metal clip onto it to secure the bulb in place. Be sure not to touch the headlight bulb, because the oils on your fingers can damage it and shorten its lifespan.

  • Reinstall the rubber cap onto the headlight housing.

  • Install the electrical connector onto the headlight.

  • Test the new headlight for proper operation.

Tips & Warnings

  • To ensure that you purchase the correct bulb from the auto parts store, remove your bulb first and take it with you to the store. The specialists there can help you locate the bulb you need for your application.
  • Wear safety glasses to protect yourself from injury.
