How to Find Out If Your Spouse Is Hiding Money

Finding out if your spouse is hiding money is not an easy thing to do because of bank regulations. The best way is to wait for a divorce attorney to file a request for production, which is required in all divorce cases. If you believe your spouse has not provided all documentation regarding his finances, you may have to take additional steps, even to the point of hiring a private investigator.

Instructions

    • 1

Review all bank statements that arrive at your home. If a bank statement comes that is in only your spouse's name and you do not recognize the envelope as a bank you do business with, write down the name of the bank. Do not open mail that does not belong to you.

    • 2

Review all receipts that you find laying around. The last four digits of a credit card number are usually found on receipts. The credit card number may be a number for a debit card.

    • 3

Check the public records for real estate purchases in your spouse's name. Check court records for liens and Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) filings. See References for links.

    • 4

Check your tax returns, especially if you file "married, filing separately." If your spouse has a return direct deposited, the direct deposit number will be on the tax return. Check to see if the account is an account that you know about.

    • 5

Hire a private investigator if checking the above records and looking for additional bank accounts does not turn up any information. If you are in the process of a divorce, take your findings to your attorney, so that the attorney can review the mandatory disclosure received from your spouse. The attorney will file the appropriate pleadings should you find additional accounts that were not provided.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are not going through a divorce, a private investigator may have access to records that you would not have access to.

  • Looking for hidden money can take an extensive amount of money, especially if attorneys and private investigators are involved. If you believe your spouse is hiding only a few thousand dollars, it may not be worth spending money to find this money. If you believe your spouse is hiding a significant amount of money, and this money is marital property, you may be entitled to a portion of that money. You may be able to recoup funds spent to find the money from your spouse.
