How to Buy Gold Watches

A gold watch can be a unique gift, as well as a useful and decorative tool. Gold watches in particular can be worn by both men and women, and are available in a variety of sizes. Your gold watch should be cleaned regularly to prevent wear, tarnish and corrosion. You can purchase gold jewelry cleaner or bring it to a professional watch store to be cleaned. Be sure to store your gold watch in a safe, dry place when you are not using it, and to dry it immediately if it becomes wet. This will ensure that your watch maintains its pristine look as long as possible.

Instructions

Decide on your budget. The amount of money you want to spend will determine whether you purchase a solid gold watch or a watch that is simply trimmed in gold. Solid gold watches will be more expensive than a metal watch with gold trimming.

    • 2

Choose what color gold you want. Gold comes in several shades: white, yellow and rose. Yellow gold is the most popular color of gold, so the watches you see will primarily be yellow gold. If the store you visit does not have the shade of gold you want, ask the salesperson if they can order it for you.

Decide what type of band you want. You can purchase a bracelet band or a watch band. Bracelet bands are usually metal and are designed to match the center portion of the watch. Bracelet bands may clasp on your hand or slide onto your wrist. Belt watch bands come in a variety of non-metal materials, such as plastic or rubber. Belt bands are typically more comfortable, but break easier than bracelet bands.

Examine the crystal. According to Diamonds International, "the crystal is the transparent cover on a watch face." The primary types of crystal are plastic, mineral glass and synthetic sapphire. Your budget will most likely determine the type of crystal your watch has. Plastic is the least expensive type of crystal and synthetic sapphire is the priciest. Ensure that the crystal has no scratches or nicks prior to making your purchase.

Ask about the store's return policy. Before making your final purchase, be sure to ask the salesperson about return and exchange policies of the store. Some stores do not allow returns or exchanges for expensive items, whereas others will allow you to bring back the watch with the accompanying receipt.
