How to Read Email Without Outlook

While conventional POP3 email has an advantage over web-based mail in that it is generally more secure, it also has a disadvantage: you may not be aware of a way to check your email account when you are away from your computer and Outlook. Use Mail2Web, a free Web-based service, to check most POP3 email accounts without using Outlook or another email client.

  • Browse to the Mail2Web website.

  • Type your full email address and password, then click the "Check Mail" button. The "Intellilogin" feature of Mail2Web will attempt to detect the server address for your email account automatically. If it is successful, you do not need to continue. If it is not, continue to Step 3 to input your account information manually.

  • Return to the Mail2Web front page and click "Advanced Login."

  • Enter the address of your email server, e.g. "mail.myserver.com."

  • Click the appropriate radio button specifying the type of server--either POP3 or IMAP4, and place a check in the "SSL" box if your server requires a secure connection. If you do not know, consult with your email provider.

  • Enter the user name and password for your email account, then click "Check Mail" to log in.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many email providers include free Web access with their email accounts. Before going through the trouble of using a third-party website such as Mail2Web, ask your email provider if a webmail server is available for you to use when you are away from your primary computer.
