How to Become a HUD Realtor

Becoming a HUD Realtor® has its perks. First, only HUD-approved agents have keys and lockbox codes for HUD properties. And, because only a HUD-approved agent can place a bid on a HUD property, you open your business to a whole new group of potential clients. It's not difficult to get HUD approval; the training is quite easy and generally just takes a few hours. You will need to learn the basics of the HUD auction process and training can be done, via video instruction, right at your office.

Acquire a real estate license from your state's Department of Real Estate. This does not make you a Realtor®, but you will still be eligible to become a HUD-approved real estate agent. An agent can only use the designation "Realtor®" if he is a member of the National Association of Realtors.

Apply for positions in offices that are headed by a HUD-approved broker. If you are currently licensed and your license is hung with a broker who is not approved, she can easily become certified. There is a very simple form to fill out and submit to HUD for that purpose.

Complete the HUD training. Your broker will determine the amount of training that is required in his office. It could entail anything from watching a few videos to reading some printed material.
