How to Add Faux Fur Onto Jeans
Adorning denim with faux fur requires a bit of specialized sewing technique to make a good-looking end product. For jeans, the best spots for faux fur include the hem and the back pockets; you may also consider sewing on a faux fur patch or two, if the nap is short enough. Work slowly and carefully, as this material may shift while you work.
Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Chalk
- Paper
- Pen or pencil
- Scissors
- Stabilizer tape
- Sewing machine
- Polyester thread
- Medium woven needles (i.e. size 11 or 14) or denim needles
Instructions

1
Use the measuring tape to size the parts that you wish to trim with faux fur. Add approximately 5/8" to the edges as a seam allowance.
-
2
Craft a paper pattern for your faux-fur pieces. A basic rectangle works fine for the hem if the jeans have a straight cut. For boot and flare cuts, draw the pattern straight at the top and bottom and incorporate a slope corresponding to the cut of the jean. For the pocket pattern, measure the pocket area and cut a rectangle (or other shape) that will fit the area.

3
Cut the faux-fur pieces out according to your pattern. Cut two pieces for each hem or one for each pocket. Remember to cut with the downward-laying grain of the fur, not against it.
-
4
Use tape to secure the pelt away from edges while sewing. Or use a damp sponge to wet the fibers and smooth them back from seam lines.
-
5
For hem trim, place the two long pieces together fur-to-fur, shorter sides together. Sew along these short sides, creating a faux fur ring. Trim the excess fur from the seam.
-
6
Slide the fur piece over and around the leg of the jean, right sides together, up to the desired placement on the leg. Stitch to the jean leg; trim. Turn the fur ring down over the hem. Zigzag the last remaining seam along the hem of the jean. The last seam connects the bottom, raw edge of the jeans to the bottom, raw hem of the fur ring.
-
7
For pocket trim, hand stitch the faux fur along the edges to attach. Keep stitches close to avoid unraveling.
-
8
Use a straight pin to pick trapped fibers from the seam line of the finished product.

Tips & Warnings
PreFurs.com offers this tip for sewing faux fur: If there are tension problems, "loop the thread around the sewing machine handle or some nearby object a couple of times to add additional tension."
