How to Replace the Ink in HP Cartridges

Buying a replacement cartridge for an HP printer can be expensive. Some HP printers, such as the photo printers, which cost around $100, have ink cartridges that are almost $40 apiece. However, there is no need to buy a replacement if the ink cartridge in your HP printer is not broken. All you need to do is replace the ink--at a fraction of the cost of a replacement cartridge.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your HP printer and open the case. The ink cartridge compartment should move to the middle, from the right side, where it is inaccessible due to a cover. Take out the ink cartridge by pressing on the tab, which is facing you, and remove it by pulling up.

    • 2

Buy an ink refill kit that has a bottle with a syringe already attached. Open your refill kit and take out the ink bottle.

    • 3

Find the filling hole on your HP ink cartridge--it's usually on the bottom side. If the sponge is very dry, moisten the syringe needle with water. Gently force the syringe needle into the sponge inside of the filling hole of the ink cartridge; doing it too fast my cause the sponge to rip, which will clog the filling hole of the cartridge.

    • 4

Gently squeeze the ink bottle to flow ink into the sponge. Do not squeeze too hard or you will expand the sponge, making some parts of the sponge contain more ink than others.

    • 5

Fill the ink cartridge until the sponge becomes moist. Do not overfill.

    • 6

Wipe the filling hole of the ink cartridge until there are no smudges on the napkins. If you overfilled the cartridge and there are drops of ink gathering at the sponge of the filling hole, take a napkin and press it against the sponge to absorb the excess ink.

    • 7

Open your printer and replace the cartridge. HP cartridges will make a click when they are put in properly.

    • 8

When the printer recognizes that there is a new ink cartridge, it will ask you to run the head cleaning utility. Allow the computer to run head cleaning, which further cleans the filling hole of the ink cartridge.
