If you live in a cold weather climate and you are worried about the undercarriage of your Mustang prematurely rusting due to snow and salt, then you could consider painting or rustproofing your car. 1
Scrub metal parts of the undercarriage that have surface rust with a metal wire brush. This includes the sheet metal, axles and any other parts that you want to paint. Sandpaper can also be used in areas that you cannot reach with a wire brush.
-
2
Tape off areas that you do not want to get overspray on by covering it with blue painter's tape. Wires, the fuel pump and rubber bushings should be protected from paint.

3
Wipe or spray the undercarriage with a degreaser designed for automotive use. Wipe clean using a dry, grease-free towel. All grease must be scrubbed off to ensure the paint adheres properly to the metal.

4
Spray the undercarriage with chassis paint. Automotive paint suppliers such as Eastman.com deal in specialty paints like chassis paint. You can use an electric sprayer, air sprayer or even paint it on with a paint brush. Using a spay gun will give you the most professional results and will usually take less time than applying with a brush. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions on drying time since each brand will be different.

5
Apply a second coat of paint. Mustangs, especially ones running wider tires then stock will kick up a lot of dirt, rocks, salt and snow, which can chip the paint. A second coat of paint will help to eliminate paint chipping. Once dry, you can remove the blue painter's tape.

Tips & Warnings
Inspect the undercarriage on a routine basis and fill in large chipped areas. Salt can work beneath the paint when chipped and can cause rust to form.
