How to Check the Memory Type in Windows XP

If you are upgrading the memory in your computer, it is important to install new memory that is the same type and at least as fast as the memory that is currently installed. Different types of memory modules are not physically compatible with one another. Determine the type of memory installed in your Windows XP-based computer using free software, saving you from opening your computer until you are ready to install your new RAM.

Instructions

    • 1

Browse to the System Information for Windows download page (see link below under Resources). Click the "SIW Standalone" package to download the version that does not require software installation.

    • 2

Double click "siw.exe" to run System Information for Windows. Click "Run" if you receive a caution from Windows about running an executable file. System Information for Windows will create a profile of your computer. This process may take some time to complete.

    • 3

Click the "Memory" category under the "Hardware" heading on the left side of the screen. You may need to scroll down to see this.

    • 4

Examine the "Memory Type" and "Speed" headings on the right side of the screen to check the type of memory installed in the system. These items show the type and speed of memory that must be purchased, e.g. "PC2-5300" and "DDR2 667."

Tips & Warnings

  • System Information for Windows is not the only free program that can scan a system to determine memory type. If it does not run on your computer or you would like to try an alternative, try the Crucial System Scanner (link also below in Resources).
