How to Add Notes to File Folders

You can name file folders in Windows to help you quickly find what you are looking for and to determine what type of files a folder contains. However, if you are on a server with many shared folders or you simply have a lot of different folders on your computer, it can be difficult to locate what you need. Fortunately, you can add notes to folders using the "Comments" field in Windows.

Things You'll Need

  • Windows XP, Vista or 7
  • Right-click the "Start Button." Select "Explore" or "Open Windows Explorer," depending on which version of Windows you are using. The "Windows Explorer" folder will open.

  • Navigate to the folder to which you want to add a note, but do not open it. Change the current view of the folder to "Details" if it is in another view. To do so, click the "View" button on the toolbar and select "Details." The contents of the current folder will display headings such as "Name," "Date Modified" and "Type."

  • Right-click a blank area of the heading row in the current folder. A menu will appear showing the current headings and other heading options. Click "More" at the bottom of this menu. The "Choose Details" dialog box will open.

  • Scroll down the "Details" section of the dialog box until you find "Comments." Select the "Comments" check box and click "OK." This will add a "Comments" heading to the folder.

  • Right-click the folder to which you want to add notes and select "Properties." In Windows XP, go to the "Summary" tab and type your note into the "Comments" field. In Windows Vista or 7, go to the "Sharing" tab and click the "Advanced Sharing" button. Select the "Share This Folder" check box and type notes into the "Comments" field. Click "OK" to add the notes to the file folder.
