How to Get a Free Month of Groceries

Most families spend at least $200-300 per month on groceries. Being on a tight budget and wanting to be home with your family can really inspire financial creativity. I use coupons for groceries on a regular basis to save big on groceries every month (you can check the "Resources" section below for easy ideas on how to do this). In the midst of my financial creativity to stretch our budget to the fullest, I have found a way that you can actually get about a month's worth of free groceries just by purchasing your groceries. I hope that I can help your budget and help your family to get free grocery items as well!

Things You'll Need

  • Your tax refund or part of your tax refund
  • Check with your local grocery stores about gift card bonuses near tax time. During the last two years, at least two of our local grocery stores have offered a 10% bonus if you purchase grocery gift cards with your tax refund money. This is one of the best freebies that I have found. Locate the grocery stores in your area that are offering this program.

  • Decide which grocery store program that you would like to use and go and purchase your grocery gift cards with your tax refund money before the program end date. The grocery stores offering this in my area do not ask to see anything regarding your taxes or tax refund. You simply go to their customer service desk and tell them that you want to purchase grocery gift cards and get the 10% bonus. You can normally purchase $1,200 worth of grocery gift cards per person. You and your spouse, partner, or roommates can usually each purchase $1,200 worth of grocery gift cards per person.

  • When you purchase $1,200 in grocery gift cards and get a 10% bonus added to your cards, you get $120 in free groceries. When two of you in your household purchase these, you get $240 in free groceries, which is about a month's worth of free groceries for many people. Enjoy your 10% bonus of free groceries. There aren't many investments right now that will guarantee you a 10% return. This is one of the better free offers for free groceries that I have found.

  • Use your grocery gift cards throughout the year to purchase the rest of your groceries. Make sure that you use the full balance prior to any gift card expiration dates. I wish you continued prosperity as you save money for your family.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check with grocery stores on their gift card specifics to determine if there are any expiration dates. In my area, the grocery store gift cards do not have any fees or expiration dates. Make sure you understand any limitations on grocery gift cards prior to purchasing them.
