How to Make Seamless Tiles in Photoshop

If you are working in 3D graphics or creating webpages, you will probably want to be able to create seamless tiles. Seamless tiles are textures that can be applied to an object or background without showing any seam, or discrepancy. While you can buy seamless tiles or even download free ones, if you want something uniquely yours you will want to make your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Load an image you would like to use as the basis for your seamless texture onto your computer. You can do this by transferring it from a digital source, downloading it from the Internet or scanning it in.

    • 2

Open Photoshop. Select "File" and click "Open." In the dialog box that pops up, browse to the image you loaded and open it.

    • 3

Select "Image" and click "Image Size." In the dialog box increase the pixel width, height and resolution to what you want for your project. For example, if you are using it on your webpage and want it to tile 2 x 2, make the size ½ the size of the page width. Click "OK."

    • 4

Select "Edit" from the menu and click "Transform" and then "Scale" in the "Tool" options at the top. Click to lock the proportions. Then resize the image to fill the lower right corner of the canvas.

    • 5

Right-click on the layer in the panel and select "Duplicate." Select the new layer.

    • 6

Select "Edit," then "Transform and click "Flip Horizontal." Move the contents of the layer to the lower left corner. Right-click on the layer and select "Merge Down."

    • 7

Right-click on the layer and select "Duplicate."

    • 8

Select "Edit," then "Transform" and click "Flip Vertical." Now move the contents of the layer to the top.

    • 9

Select the "Clone Stamp" tool. Hold down the "Alt" key and select an area near one of the central seams you see. Now use the tool to paint over these inner seams. Don't touch the edge of the canvas. You may have to select new reference points as you work.

    • 10

Select "File and click "Save." Name your file and save it as a high-resolution JPEG.
