How to Install Catalyst Drivers Over an Old Set in Vista

Certain graphics cards require Catalyst drivers from Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. These graphics cards typically contain the ATI chipset (not the NVIDIA chipset). Catalyst drivers at times need updating, but many users may not be aware of how to install catalyst drivers over an old set, particularly when using Windows Vista. Some may not attempt it, due to the problems with Windows Vista drivers when Vista was released, or just a hesitancy to do something incorrectly, but keeping your graphics card drivers up to date is important if you want it to operate properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the correct link for your version of Windows Vista (see Resources section), 32 bit or 64 bit. Select "Download" for the full Catalyst package.

    • 2

Click "Save File" when prompted. This will save the file to your default downloads location, which may vary, depending on how you set up your version of Windows Vista.

    • 3

Locate the downloaded installer file and double-click to initiate the installation.

    • 4

Click "Allow" if you get a pop-up announcing that an unidentified program is attempting to access your computer. The software is tested and safe.

    • 5

Check on the next window to make sure that the driver is selected to install when prompted about components to install. You only need the driver, but may want to install other components for added functionality.

    • 6

Click "Next" at the bottom of the window.

    • 7

Click "Install" at the bottom of the next window to begin the installation. You do not need to change the destination folder from the default settings unless you modified the install location for the drivers when you originally installed or updated last time (you will need to know that location and use it if you did change it).

    • 8

Select your language on the next page from the drop-down menu. Click "Next" at the bottom of the window.

    • 9

Click "Install" in the next window.

    • 10

Select "Express" at the top in the right section of the next window. Click "Next" at the bottom. Again, if you changed the install location originally, you will need to change it on this window as well. Otherwise you do not need to modify the install location.

    • 11

Read the license agreement and click "Accept" on the next window. Your installation will now begin.

    • 12

Click "Finish" at the bottom of the window when the installation completes. You will see a green circle with a check mark when it is done.
