1
Provide essay instructions, grading rubric and submission guidelines using an online classroom platform. Instructors post assignment requirements as well as student resources on the classroom "assignment page" or virtual white board. Students usually have a window of time during which papers can be submitted, after which students can no longer turn in the assignment without permission from the instructor.

2
Accept student submissions and provide feedback. Student feedback may be provided in a virtual conference using chat or IM software, or via snapshots of each page of the paper where comments have been provided in the margins. Some software has editing options built in so that instructors can make specific comments on aspects of the paper such as grammar, spelling and citation format. It's important not to change a paper's contents, but to make comments or editor's marks so that students can learn what to change rather than simply seeing the final corrected draft.

3
Post the final grade by making comments on student papers and then returning them within a 48-to-52-hour window if possible. Online students have generally entered into an online program to expedite the education process. Therefore, they usually cannot move on until feedback (and a final grade) has been received. Provide the feedback and/or final grade by posting either or both in the virtual classroom or grade book as soon as possible.
