How to Organize iPod Music
The standard iPod desktop software, iTunes, is designed to automatically import any song that is stored on the hard drive of your computer. While this simplifies the process of transferring any song that you have saved to your computer onto your iPod, it can also make it difficult to find the songs that you want to listen to when you want to listen to them. If you want to organize the music on your iPod to make it easier to locate, you can separate the songs into playlists in iTunes and transfer those playlists onto your iPod.

1
Create a new folder in iTunes by going to the "File" menu and selecting "New Playlist Folder." Assign the new folder that appears in the iTunes window a category and enter it as the name for the folder. For instance, you may want to make a "Favorite Artists" folder for your favorite artists or separate your music files into genres, such as "Pop," "Country" or "Musicals."
-
2
Return to the "File" menu and select "New Smart Playlist." This option brings up a window in which you can search for music files to build your playlist.

3
Check the "Match the following rule" option in the "Smart Playlist" window, change the first box to "Artist" and the second box to "contains" to search by artist. Type the name of any artist into the third box and click "OK." When the playlist appears in the iTunes window, drag it into the playlist folder that you created.

4
Set the first box "Match the following rule" in the "Smart Playlist" window to "Genre" and the second box to "is" to search by genre. Type the name of any music genre used in iTunes, such as "Folk," "Rock" or "New Age," into the third box and click "OK" to pull up all songs in that genre. When the playlist is created, drag the list into a genre playlist folder you have created.

5
Connect your iPod to the computer using the cable that came with the device. Click on the iPod in the "Devices" pane of iTunes and go to the "Music" tab in the main pane.
-
6
Click on the box next to "Sync Music" and choose the "Selected playlists, artists and genres" option. Select all of the new playlists that you have created for your iPod device and click "Sync" to transfer the organized iPod playlists onto the iPod.
