Cell phones typically come with a few standard ringtones for you to choose from. If you want a ringtone that features popular music you may have the option to purchase it for a fee. If you already have an MP3 file of the ringtone that you want, you can create the ringtone on your own. There are a couple of converter programs that you can buy to do an MP3 to ringtone conversion. If you prefer to do it for free, there is an online conversion site where you can convert your MP3 to a ringtone at no cost.

      Pick a tool to convert your MP3 file for you. Programs for download include MP3 Ringtone Maker and MP3 to Ringtone Gold, each of which has a cost of $29.95 as of March 2011. For a free option, online MP3 to ringtone conversion is available on the MP3mer website.

      Click on the "Upload" button on the MP3mer screen to add your MP3 file for conversion. Only one file can be converted into a ringtone at a time. A progress meter will appear on the screen at the MP3 uploads. Wait for this to disappear and for the song wave to appear on the screen.

      Drag the orange marker to where you want to select the start of your 30-second ringtone and click once. Click again at the place where you want the ringtone to end. The "Selected Duration" field will show the length of your selection.

      Use the drop-down menu by "File Format" to set your ringtone file type. Choices include the popular AAC and MP4 formats. Click on the drop-down menu by "Download" to select how you want to download your new ringtone. You can save it to your computer, send it to your cell phone or to your email address.

      Press the "Make a Ringtone" button when you are ready to convert your MP3 to a ringtone. When it is done you will get a "Success" message on the screen and a download link if you want it to save to your computer. Close the message when you are done.
