How to Color Hair With Squid Ink

Squid ink hair dye is a natural product that can be used to dye hair black, to deepen natural dark tones and to hide gray hair. Use squid ink hair dye if you want a dye that is nontoxic and long-lasting and won't damage hair. Squid ink hair dye kits typically use squid ink that has been infused with ingredients such as grape seed oil and pro-vitamin B5, which help to ensure moisturized hair and a healthy dye job. Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hair thoroughly with a clarifying shampoo. Pat the hair dry with a towel but leave it dry for the dying process.

    • 2

Place surgical tape or petroleum jelly on the skin around the hairline to prevent skin discoloration.

    • 3

Place a towel around your shoulders or put on an old shirt.

    • 4

Apply the squid ink to the hair. Wear plastic gloves to avoid discoloration of the hands. Keep partitioning the hair at different points, and squeeze even beads of dye down the length of the hair from roots to end. Longer hair can be pinned up in styling clips to keep sections of hair out of the way while you work. Work until you have evenly coated the entire head of hair. Comb through the hair with a comb to ensure even distribution of the dye.

    • 5

Pin longer hair up with styling clips and cover the hair with a plastic cap. Follow the product instructions to determine how long to leave the squid ink dye in. Squid ink hair dye typically works very quickly and is left on anywhere from five to 25 minutes depending on how dark you are going and your original hair color.

    • 6

Treat the hair with heat as directed in the product instructions. Apply heat with a blow dryer set on "Low."

    • 7

Rinse your hair with cold water, taking care not to get ink on your skin. Cold water will prevent the hair from softening and releasing too much pigment.

    • 8

Condition the hair with conditioner. Leave the conditioner in for three minutes and re-rinse with cold water.

    • 9

Blow dry the hair completely dry and avoid shampooing for at least 24 hours. A bit more ink may come out in the first two to three shampoos.
