How to Fix the Internet Explorer Registry Settings After a Virus Attack

The Internet Explorer browser is a standard Windows product that ships with all copies of the Windows operating system. Like all other Windows-standard products, it uses an active registry to keep it running smoothly. But if this registry is corrupted by a virus, Internet Explorer may work unexpectedly and you will experience persistent crashing. However, there is a tool you can use to fix a registry error.

Instructions

    • 1

Get rid of the virus that caused the error using antivirus software. If you do not have a paid subscription service, such as McAfee or Norton, you can download a free program, such as AVG Free or Avast.

    • 2

Download a registry cleaner. There are several varieties that you can purchase, but a good free alternative (targeted for Internet Explorer only) is FixIE. Find a download link for this program in the Resources section below.

    • 3

Launch the program and click on the "Run" button. All of the current registry files will be deleted, and new ones will be installed.

    • 4

Launch Internet Explorer. Although your bookmarks, cache and cookies will be gone, it should be back to perfect working order.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your registry corrupts again soon after you repair it, you have an especially persistent virus and need to reinstall Windows to get rid of it.
