How to Repaint an Altoids Tin

Altoids tins are small metal containers that contain those delicious and powerful mints that many people enjoy. Often people who enjoy eating Altoids mints save the small tins and use them in a variety of different ways. You can cover Altoids tins with felt or clay, but perhaps the easiest way to transform an Altoids tin is by painting it. Repaint an Altoids tin in a bright and bold color and use the recycled Altoids tin to hold tiny treasures.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the newspaper to cover your entire work area.

    • 2

      Open the Altoids tin completely.

    • 3

Place the Altoids tin onto the newspaper so the insides of the top and bottom are facing up.

    • 4

Spray the entire inside and outside surfaces of the Altoids tin with the primer spray. Allow the primer to dry completely.

    • 5

Turn the Altoids tin over so the bottom edges of the top and bottom are facing up.

    • 6

Spray the entire outside surface of the bottom of the Altoids tin with the primer spray and allow the primer spray to dry completely before proceeding.

    • 7

Turn the Altoids tin back over so the insides of the top and bottom are facing up again.

    • 8

Spray the entire exposed surface again with the metal spray paint. Make sure the paint covers every surface area that is visible. Wait to proceed until the paint is completely dry.

    • 9

Turn the Altoids tin over again so the bottom edges are facing up.

    • 10

Pray the entire outside surface of the bottom of the Altoids tin with the spray paint. Allow the paint to dry completely.

    • 11

Apply a second coat of spray paint to the top and bottom sides of the Altoids tin to finish painting the Altoids tin.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is possible to separate the bottom and top of the tin by using a flat screwdriver to pry apart the hinge on the back of the Altoids tin. This is not a required step; however.

  • Use the spray paint and primer in a well-ventilated area to avoid breathing the toxic fumes.
