How to Make Unique Card Folds

Greeting cards are given for many different occasions such as birthdays, holidays and weddings. You can make your own greeting cards to give cards with a more personal feel. You can create your own greeting cards with unique card folds if you get tired of creating the same single fold cards like the ones that you find in the card shop. Uniquely folded cards might be a little tricky the first time around, but once you get the hang of it they don't take much more time and effort than the single fold cards.

Things You'll Need

  • Card stock
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Paper slicer with cutting and scoring blade
  • Craft knife
  • Cutting mat
  • Bone folder
  • Double-sided tape

Tri-Fold Shutter Card

  • Cut a piece of card stock to 10 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches using a paper slicer.

  • Orient the piece of card stock so that it lays in front of you with the long edges at the top and bottom.

  • Measure along the top edge with your ruler and make small marks at 1 3/4 inches and 3 1/2 inches in from each side edge. Score the paper at these marks. Lay the paper in front of you again in the same orientation.

  • Measure 1 1/2 inches down from the top of the card and 1 1/2 inches up from the bottom of the card. Cut between the first and last score lines across the card at these points. To make these cuts place your card on a cutting mat and use a ruler and craft knife to make nice straight cuts. A paper slicer won't allow you to accurately make these cuts because you won't be able to see exactly where to blade starts and stops.

  • Fold the space between the left edge and first score line back along the first 1 1/2 inches at the top and the last 1 1/2 inches at the bottom, leave the middle portion of the score line unfolded.

  • Push the fold back at the top and bottom at the second score line and forward in the middle, between the cuts.

  • Push the fold forward at the top and bottom at the third score line and forward in the middle, between the cuts.

  • Fold the space between the fourth score line and the right edge of the card forward at the top 1 1/2 inches and the bottom 1 1/2 inches. Leave the middle part of the score line unfolded. You can see an example of how these folds are supposed to be made at the link in the Resources section.

  • Run a bone folder along all folds to create crisp creases.

Squash Book Card

  • Cut three pieces of card stock to 7 1/2 inch squares using your paper slicer.

  • Score each square piece of card stock in the middle from top to bottom and side to side. Then, score each piece of card stock once diagonally, from one corner to the other. Do not score diagonally both ways.

  • Push the diagonal folds in towards each other so that your paper folds flat into a smaller square. Crease these folds with a bone folder.

  • Open all of the squares up. Line the squares up so they are diamond oriented, side-by-side with the diagonal creases in each running up and down. Place double-sided tape in the left and right diamonds created on the sheet by the creases. Attach the diamond on the left to the center diamond by placing the crease-created diamond on the right side of the sheet over the crease-created diamond on the left side of the center sheet. Attach the diamond on the right to the center diamond by placing the crease-created diamond on the left side of the sheet over the crease-created diamond on the left side of the center sheet.

  • Cut and adhere 4 by 4 inches pieces of card stock to the squares that are at the front and the back of the card when it is folded..
