How to Make a Handmade Fabric Embellished Greeting Card

Create pretty and decorative greeting cards using bits of fabric. A little imagination can turn scraps of plain or printed fabric pieces, into little works of art that can be framed and admired. Children and adults can turn their artistic abilities of any level into three-dimensional handmade treasures enhanced with embellishments. Make a supply of assorted greeting cards with leftover scraps of materials from sewing projects including ribbons. A "touch and feel" greeting card for any occasion will be appreciated by the recipient as a special gift.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase white card stock at office supply or craft stores. Using a paper cutter, cut one sheet of card stock to 10-inches by 7-inches. Fold in half, pressing the crease with a spoon to make a blank 5-inch by 7-inch card. Make as many cards as desired for a project or to build a supply for future use.

    • 2

Select three contrasting fabric pieces and use a marker to draw three different size stars on the back. Cut them out with scissors.

    • 3

Arrange the stars on the front of a blank greeting card, slightly overlapping with the largest in the back.

    • 4

Apply white glue to the back of each star and press onto the card as originally arranged.

    • 5

Add embellishments such as small buttons or little metallic stars with hot glue in a random fashion on the card.

    • 6

Use a marker to write a personal greeting such as, "You're a Star! Happy Birthday" on the inside of the card. Insert the card into an A-7 size envelope (to fit a 5-inch by 7-inch card).

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep a craft box handy to collect pieces of fabric swatches, ribbon pieces and embellishments to use for decorating greeting cards.

  • Ask for expired drapery sample books at home interior stores. These are free for the asking and contain wonderful fabric swatches to use in making greeting cards.

  • As an option, cut a large image from fabric such as a large flower bloom to attach directly onto a greeting card with hot glue.

  • Cut letters out of fabric to create the name of the recipient on the front of the card.

  • Choose a theme when selecting fabric swatches for a card such as holidays, new baby or birthdays.

  • Cut strips of fabric pieces and make a basket-weave design on the front of the card, hot gluing the ends onto the card.

  • A-7 size blank envelopes can be purchased in quantity through printing companies.

  • If a child is participating in this project, only an adult should use the paper cutter and hot glue gun.
