1
Purchase young, healthy bamboo specimens for training purposes. Select three or four stalks that are no taller than four inches in height. Choose bamboo that exhibits healthy root growth. Look for ones that have many fine roots that freely move outward from the plant. Avoid purchasing plants that have tight, tangled roots.

2
Select a wide-mouthed, shallow container to grow your bamboo houseplants. Choose a planter that is three to four inches deep. Ensure this container is water-tight and does not contain drainage holes. Cover the bottom of the container with a layer of filling, made up of small pebbles, beads, glass marbles or broken ceramic chips.

Gently insert the bottoms of your bamboo stalks into the layer of filling. Place the stalks no further than two inches apart. Fill up the remainder of the container using the filling materials you have selected. Hold stalks in place so they remain upright during filling. Add non-chlorinated water to just below the rim of the bamboo container.

Weave the young stalks by twisting the side shoots of each stalk together with the adjacent stalk. This will resemble a loose half-knot. Use pieces of florist tape to hold the twists in place. Take your time and use a gently touch when weaving the shoots in this manner.

5
Check the taped ends regularly for new growth. After the shoots have grown another inch, remove the florist tape, make another twist with the new growth and tape the new twist in the same manner. Create your own design by using your imagination when weaving Lucky bamboo stalks.
