How to Text From an Email to Any Cell Phone Network

Most cell phone companies allow you to send an email text to a subscriber as long as he has the text messaging feature active on his cell phone account. Online email account services, such as the one offered by Yahoo! for free, allow you to text people conveniently from your email account in a few quick steps. This is beneficial to you if you're trying to save some money, because you don't have to pay per text or even own a cell phone.

Create a mail account with Yahoo.com (or a similar online email service that has a text messaging feature). With this feature, you can simply enter a mobile number and send a text from your email box. When you log into your mail account, ensure that you are in the latest version of Yahoo! Mail---not the "classic" version.

    • 2

Click "New" and select the "Text Message" option. A box will appear that contains a space for your message and the number.

    • 3

Type in the mobile number with the country code first (i.e., +12035551212). Usually, to send a text message you would also have to find the carrier's email extension (like @vtext.com for Verizon) but with this method the service you can send a message to any mobile number regardless of whether you know the extension.

    • 4

Enter your message in the bottom pane---you are limited to 160 characters.

    • 5

Click "Send." Your recipient will receive two texts---one initial text to warn him that someone is trying to text him from Yahoo (or your chosen online email service) and then the text message that you just sent. He will see your email username.

    • 6

Wait for a reply from the subscriber---all he has to do is type in a reply message as usual. You will receive the reply in instant-message format in your email account. Continue your conversation and close the window when you're done.
