How to Use Sugar Cubes in Crafts
Sugar cubes are simple to use in a variety of craft projects, from building a pyramid or an igloo to creating a winter wonderland. The secret to a successful sugar-cube craft that holds together is in the mortar. Like every strong structure, a good mortar is essential to holding the bricks, or in this case sugar cubes, together. A good mortar mix to use is the same substance that tops many lemon pies, a meringue.
Things You'll Need
- 2 egg whites
- Mixer
- 1 1/2 cups confectioner's sugar
- Pastry brush
- Sugar cubes

Sugar-Cube Mortar Mix
-
1
Beat two egg whites on high speed until the egg whites form soft peaks.
-
2
Beat in 1/4 cup of confectioner's sugar until it is thoroughly mixed into the fluffy egg whites.
-
-
3
Continue to beat in the remaining confectioner's sugar in 1/4 cup increments. Make sure that the sugar is thoroughly blended into the egg whites, and mix until it forms stiff peaks.

Spread the mortar mix on one side of a sugar cube. Place the sugar cube on a flat surface with the mortar-mix edge perpendicular to the seated edge. This is the first in a row of 10 sugar cubes. Continue to connect the remaining nine sugar cubes in that row together by spreading mortar on one side and then pressing the side opposite the mortar side to the last sugar cube in the row. Do not add mortar to the tenth, or last, sugar cube.
-
5
Form a square of 10 rows with 10 sugar cubes per row for the base of your pyramid, using the mortar mix as the glue.
-
6
Repeat Steps 1 and 2, but make nine rows with nine sugar cubes in a row. This is the second layer of your pyramid. Spread the sugar-cube mortar mix in the center on top of the 10-row layer. Center the nine-row layer on top of the 10-row layer to begin to build your pyramid.

Repeat these steps, making each successive layer one sugar cube and one row less than the last. Build your pyramid until there is one sugar cube at the top.
