Call your lender. You may have avoided the lender because you did not have the ability to make the payments. If something has prohibited you from making the payments, let the lender know. The lender may have never repossessed the vehicle in the first place if the lender knew that you had a financial situation, such as losing your job, that stopped you from making the payments. The lender may be able to work out payments with you.

Ask for payment assistance. The lender may be able to offer you deferments to get the account current. If not, you may need to pay the past due amount to reinstate the loan. You could use money you have in savings, sell other assets or borrow it from a relative or friend.Once the past due amount is paid, the lender may be able to reduce the monthly payments so that they are affordable for you. Once the lender and you work out some payment arrangements, the lender will reinstate the auto loan and you will again have ownership of your vehicle.

Keep up your end of the bargain. You will need to make payments on time to show the lender your appreciation their working with you. If you fall behind on payments, the lender may repossess the car again and you might not be as lucky to obtain payment arrangements again.
