How to Send HTML Email in Thunderbird

When you compose an email in the Mozilla Thunderbird email client, you may choose to send the email in HTML or in plain text. While plain text emails are compatible with more types of email clients, HTML email can include extra features such as clip art and fonts of different colors and sizes. Configure Thunderbird to send email in the HTML format if you would like to allow yourself a greater degree of freedom in sending personalized and colorful emails.

  • In Thunderbird, click "Tools," then click "Account Settings."

  • Click the "Composition & Addressing" category on the left side of the screen under the email account that you are using.

  • Place a check in the box labeled "Compose messages in HTML format."

  • Click "OK." All messages sent from Thunderbird will be sent in the HTML format.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some people configure their email clients to display HTML emails in plain text, because HTML can be used to hide malicious code in messages. When sending HTML emails, be mindful of the fact that some recipients may be unable to see clip art or other additions.
