How to Get to the Control Panel From the Internet Explorer Kiosk Mode

Internet Explorer's "kiosk mode" displays a full-screen browser window without a title bar, toolbars or buttons, and without the Windows taskbar at the bottom of the screen. This mode is useful when you want to make a computer available only for visiting a certain site. For example, a store could set up a computer in kiosk mode to allow customers to browse the store's own website but no others. Since the browser takes up the whole screen, kiosk mode also doesn't let you access other functions of the computer, such as the Control Panel settings. To get to the Control Panel, you need to navigate the computer out of kiosk mode.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold down "Alt" and hit "F4" to take the computer out of kiosk mode. Alternatively, you can hold down "Ctrl" and hit "W."

    • 2

Click the "Start" button. Select "Contol Panel."

    • 3

Adjust the Control Panel settings as needed, then close the Control Panel.

    • 4

Return to kiosk mode by clicking the "Start" button again and choosing "Run."

    • 5

Type "iexplorer -k" (without the quotes) and hit "Enter" or click "OK." Internet Explorer will start up again in kiosk mode. The default page for kiosk mode will revert to whatever the computer's IE homepage is. If the wrong page appears, kill out kiosk mode the same way you did in Step 1 and return to the "Run" dialogue you called up in Step 4. This time, type "iexplorer -k (website)," and replace "(website)" with the full address of the page you want to run in kiosk mode.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the "Alt + F4" and "Ctrl + W" shortcuts don't work, the computer probably has additional security software installed to keep people from disabling kiosk mode, in which case you may not be able to access the Control Panel at all.

  • Explorer's kiosk mode should be considered more of a convenience feature than a security feature. A savvy user will know the shortcuts provided here. Don't leave sensitive material on a computer exposed to the public in kiosk mode.
