How to Find a Voter Identification Number

A voter identification number gives each registered voter a unique identity in the state. A voter gets a number when he or she registers to vote. The number becomes part of the voter's record in the voter register for the political district. A citizen can find a registered voter's identification number by knowing the political district the voter is registered to vote in.

Choose the election office for a county or a state. The office for the county or state the voter's political district belongs to holds the voter's registration record in the voter register. Both the county office and the state office have the record. You request the voter registration record for the voter from the office you choose.

Request a copy from the county voter registrar, county clerk or county recorder. For a state request, request the record from the secretary of state or other state office responsible for holding voter records for the public. Visit the office at the posted address. Bring the voter's name, address, date of birth and voting precinct. Ask to see the voter register that contains this voter's record. Write down the voter registration number. Or pay a fee for a copy from the record.

You can mail a request for the voter's record to a posted mailing address. Be sure to include the voter's information to identify the record for the elections office. Type up the request and mail in to the office in an envelope. You can make this same request with a phone call.

Request a voter register for the voter's voting area. This method costs you more for the more information. But, if you want the official register entry or want more than one number form the same political area, this method is a good option. Since the voter identification number is one of the basic pieces of information in the voter's record, you can read it from a voter register list.

Make a request from the county officer or state officer. States keep a central statewide list. Select the area you want the voter records for: the state, a U.S. congressional district, a state congressional district, a county, city, town or a precinct. The state office can provide a list for all five, and a county office a list for any area other than the sate. Request that the list be alphabetized, including for the precinct.
