How to Fight Out of State Speeding Tickets

Traffic citations can be very upsetting and costly for any driver. Repeated speeding tickets can result in extra points on your license, raised insurance rates and possibly even license revocation. Speeding tickets issued outside of your state-of-residence can be even more frustrating because it can be harder to get to court dates and handle legal situations far from home. However, there are options for fighting out-of-state speeding tickets that should be considered.

Instructions

    • 1

Request a jury trial. Send a written request with delivery confirmation to the judge, pleading not guilty. Send the notice about two weeks prior to your trial date. Jury trials are a hassle for the court and they don't like doing one. You may get the charge dropped by requesting one if they are available in your state.

    • 2

Apply for a continuance. Once the jury trial date is set, apply for a continuance about two weeks prior to the trial. You still want to use certified mail. You must have a valid reason, such as you have to be out of town for work or you can prove an illness. It is then up the court to respond.

Hire a traffic attorney. They can be expensive but can save you money compared to ticket costs and the increase in insurance premiums. If the continuances don't get your case thrown out, an attorney can handle your court responsibilities for you and either get the ticket overturned or get you the best possible deal.
