How to Find a Census Tract Number

A census tract of land is a tiny subdivision within a county. The purpose of establishing numbers for tracts of land is to have a stable tracking system for taking census data. If you have a census tract number, you can easily find out about the area's population and housing statistics. This is especially helpful if you are planning to move into a neighborhood and want to find out more about it. After you find your census tract number, you can look at a map and view the entire neighborhood and print out a PDF copy.

Step 1

Visit the American Factfinder website.

Step 2

Click on the "Fact Sheet" on the left side of the page. Make sure the tab that says 2006-2008 is highlighted, since this is the most recent Census information.

Step 3

Click the "Search by Address" hyperlink to find your tract number. Type in the street address, city, state, and ZIP code and hit "Go."

Step 4

Find the Census Tract Number for your address on the left side of the address box.

Step 5

Review the social, economic, housing characteristics and the ACS demographic estimates of your area. These include population statistics, educational level, age, ethnicity and other relevant information about the area's residents.
