How to Send a Schedule to a Google Calendar

Google has designed many tools to make Google Calendar (GCal) an easy-to-use, efficient scheduling application. One example: Gmail and/or GVENT mobile phone users can send schedule information to Google Calendar from within an email or as a SMS text message. Gmail auto-fills information into the Google Calendar "Create event" window, and the GVENT feature takes a text message and automatically recognizes and updates the calendar with the event information in the message. Whether you're working in Gmail or on the go, you can quickly send your schedule to Google Calendar with a few computer or mobile phone keystrokes.

Instructions

  1. Gmail

    • 1

Open an email in Gmail that contains event information.

    • 2

Click the "More Actions" button and select "Create event" from the drop-down menu. A Google Calendar "Create event" window pops open with the information auto-filled.

    • 3

Edit your event information as desired in the provided fields ("What" "When" "Repeats" "Descriptions: ").

    • 4

Push "Save" to insert the event to Google Calendar. Repeat to add additional events from emails as needed.

    GVENT SMS Text Messaging

    • 5

Follow the link in the Resources section to check if the GVENT feature is offered in your country and by your mobile phone carrier.

    • 6

Register your mobile phone. Click the "Settings" link in Google Calendar and then the "Mobile Setup" tab. Enter your country, phone and/or carrier information. Disregard the "Carrier" section if the area has "See Help Center for supported providers," as you've already confirmed the service offering for your country.

    • 7

Click the "Send Verification Code" button to send a verification code to your mobile phone.

    • 8

Enter the verification code on the "Mobile Setup" screen in the "Verification code" field and then click "Finish setup" to finish registering your phone for GVENT SMS Text Messaging.

    • 9

Compose a text message to "GVENT (48368)" to update your Google Calendar with event information. Your message can contain any combination of available letters and numbers to describe your event, as Google Calendar uses sophisticated text message recognition software. Examples:

"Soccer game 5 call Betsy about uniforms"

Lunch with Dad at Joe's Diner 1pm Friday

      18:30 webinar Monday, 12/11/10

Bath at "Binky's" 3p.m. Wednesday for SQ "remember doggie treats"

    • 10

Send your text. Google Calendar should then send a confirmation of receipt message back to your phone

Tips & Warnings

  • To check your Google Calendar events, text message "'48368' (GVENT)" and type "next" to find out the next event on your schedule, "day" to receive a notification containing the schedule for your current day or "nday" to get the schedule for the next day.

  • If GVENT isn't supported or offered, you can't use GVENT SMS text messaging.

  • Always include a date in your GVENT message if the event isn't occurring on the day you're sending the message, as Google Calendar may add the information to the current date without clarification.
