How to Get Perfect Skin in Photos Using Photoshop

Everyone who has their photograph taken wishes that their skin was better at some point. Blemishes, for example, can be distracting when looking at a portrait and, therefore, many people would like them removed. Using Photoshop and working diligently, your subject can boast perfect skin.

  1. The Healing Brush

    • 1

      Open the photograph in Photoshop.

      Click on the "Bandaid" icon on the left side of the Photoshop screen. Choose "Healing Brush Tool."

      Set a brush diameter of 19 pixels and 15% hardness.

      Zoom in on your picture to about 200%.

      Click "Alt" and left-click with the mouse near the blemish, on an area of clear skin. Left-click one time only and release the "Alt" key.

      Left-click directly on the blemish one time. Do not swirl the brush around while left-clicking.

      Repeat for all visible blemishes.

    The Clone Stamp Tool

      Select the stamp-shaped tool on the left side of the screen. Choose "Clone Stamp Tool." This should be used in high contrast areas of the photograph.

      Press "Alt" and left-click next to the blemished area.

      Left-click directly on the blemish in the high contrast area one time.

      Repeat for blemishes in high contrast areas of the photograph, such as places where the sun shines directly on the skin.

    The Magic Wand Tool

      Choose the Magic Wand Tool on the left side of the screen. Select "Magic Wand Tool."

      Set the "Tolerance" parameter to ten. Select "Anti-Alias," "Contiguous," then "Sample all Layers."

      Click on the Magic Wand and press "Shift" to select the face. Do not select the hair, eyes, eyebrows, lips or nostrils.

      Right-click with the mouse and select "Layer via Copy" to create a new layer with only the selected skin area.

      Right-click and select "Duplicate Layer," then click "OK" to create an exact copy of the skin layer.

    The Blurring Tool

      Select "Filter," "Blur" then "Gaussian Blur." Set the "Radius" to provide a smooth, consistent color. The "Radius" pixel amount will vary depending on the quality of your photograph.

      Press the "Control" key and click on the "eye" icon next to "Layer 1." Select the camera icon next to the "FX" at the bottom right side of the screen to combine the layers.

      Select the "Brush" tool. Choose size 27 for the brush and set both the Opacity and the Flow to 50%.

      Ensure that your background and foreground colors are black and white by checking the left side of the screen.

      Brush the edges of the face mask until they blend into the actual face. Be careful around the hair, eyes, eyebrows, lips and nostrils. Go back to the Opacity selection and lower it to 30% to complete the work on your photograph.
