How to Decorate With Foam Stamps

Foam stamps are stamps made from designs cut out of thin sheets of foam, which are then adhered to a foam block. The intricacies of rubber and clear stamps are easily blocked up by acrylic ink, a thicker medium than stamp pad ink. Foam stamps are wonderful tools for adding stamped images to fabric, walls and many other surfaces where acrylic paint adheres better than stamp pad ink. This makes them an ideal tool for decorating. Instructions

    • 1

Use a measuring tape and pencil to plan and mark out where you want to place stamped images on your wall. You can use foam stamps to create a mural or you can stamp images, spacing them evenly in a grid-like pattern.

    • 2

Squirt some of your acrylic paint out onto a paper plate. You can also use a palette to squirt your paints onto if you have one already.

    • 3

Hold your foam stamp in your hand so that the image side of the stamp is facing up.

    • 4

Apply a thin layer of acrylic paint onto the raised portion of the foam stamp using a foam paint brush. Don't dip the stamp into the acrylic paint on the paper plate, you will get too much paint on the stamp and end up with a sloppy image on your wall.

    • 5

Press the foam stamp onto the wall where you want the stamped image to be. Press firmly on the stamp, keeping the pressure even so that the image comes out clear. Pull the stamp away from the wall.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use this same technique to decorate furniture such as bookcases as well as dresses with foam stamps.

  • You can use artist brushes to apply the acrylic paint onto the foam stamp if you would like the stamped image to have more than one color. You can also use an artist brush to touch up the stamped image on your wall.

  • You can use foam stamps to decorate almost any surface since it can be used with any medium that can be spread on the stamping surface. For example, you can use concrete stain with foam stamps to decorate your patio or any other concrete surface. For decorating canvas totes or t-shirts, use foam stamps with fabric paint.

  • If you make a mistake or are not happy with a stamped image, wipe it off with a sponge and some warm water.
