How to Change the Oil in a Dodge Sprinter

Dodge Sprinter is a popular cargo and passenger van, offering comfort and large capacity with driveability and fuel economy. Regular oil changes are needed to keep it running smoothly. If you have the ASSYST feature, your Sprinter will indicate when your oil needs changing. Though you can take your Sprinter in for servicing, changing the oil is a simple process you can do yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your engine and let it cool for at least an hour before you begin. Since hot oil can cause serious injury, never change the oil while the engine is hot.

    • 2

Position oil recycle container or catch basin beneath the drain plug of the oil pan. Some recycle containers use the lid as the actual catch basin.

    • 3

Use a wrench to remove drain plug from the bottom of the oil pan and drain old oil.

    • 4

Loosen and remove the oil filter cap and oil filter using the oil filter wrench.

    • 5

Remove the old O-rings and replace them with the new ones provided in the new filter kit. There will be three O-rings to replace.

    • 6

Place the new oil filter into position, sliding it over the mounting spike.

    • 7

Replace the drain plug, tightening it just enough to seal the drain without stripping the threads.

    • 8

Replace the oil filter cap, re-tightening it by hand and taking care not to over-tighten it.

    • 9

Remove oil cap and refill engine with 9.5 quarts of new oil. Use oil that is approved by Dodge for Sprinter use. Make sure to replace oil cap after filling.

    • 10

Check your oil with the dipstick and a rag to make sure you have filled it to the proper level.

    • 11

Start engine and carefully check for any leaks.

    • 12

Reset ASSYST option if included in your Sprinter. To reset, turn key to the second position. Hit the "MI" button on the dash two times. Turn key to the "key out" position. Turn key to second position while pressing the "MI" button at the same time. Listen for the confirmation noise.
