How to Make a Crayon Caddy

Kids can never have too many crayons and markers to use to create everyday artwork. But the problem with all those crayons are the boxes--it's difficult to see the colors when they're inside the original box, and once they are taken out, they're in danger rolling out of reach. Putting crayons in a pencil box is hardly any better, as kids still have to dig through a large collection. A crayon caddy is a better solution to crayon storage as it holds all a child's colors upright and keeps them easy to see and reach.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the paper towel rolls into 2-inch segments. This is approximately two-thirds the height of a fresh crayon. If your crayons are shorter, adjust the height of the tubes or include tubes of two different heights.

    • 2

Fill the shoebox with upright tubes. Smaller boxes from kid shoes will require fewer tubes, whereas larger shoeboxes will need more tubes, but hold more crayons. The box should be filled completely with tubes for the best results. Remove tubes.

    • 3

Pour a large puddle of white glue on the paper plate. Dip each tube into the glue to completely coat the bottom. Be generous with the glue--the more glue used the more study the finished caddy will be. Place back into the box. Repeat with each tube until the box is filled. Allow to dry overnight.

    • 4

Decorate the outside of the shoebox with construction paper if desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cardboard from toilet paper rolls can also be used for this project.
