How to Make Automatic Dishwasher Detergent
The cost of everything is rising these days, leading more and more people to get creative and find ways to save a buck. Some have reduced their amount of travel, while others have cut back on eating out. Still others have found their money-saving niche in whipping up their own cleaning supplies right in their own homes using simple and inexpensive ingredients. Things You'll Need
- Washing soda
- Borax
- Kosher salt
- Citric acid
- Measuring cup
- Stirring utensil
- Airtight, lidded storage container

Measure one cup of washing soda, and pour this into the storage container.

Measure one cup borax and empty this into the storage container.

Measure 1/2 cup each kosher salt and citric acid, then add these to the storage container.

Using your stirring utensil, carefully stir to thoroughly combine the ingredients of your detergent.

Store your new automatic dishwasher detergent in the storage container where you mixed the ingredients.

Use 1 tbsp. of detergent per load of dishes washed.

Tips & Warnings
Washing soda is not the same thing as baking soda, but it can be found in the laundry aisle of your local grocery store. If you cannot find citric acid, don't worry--just use unsweetened lemonade mix instead. Be sure only to use plain unsweetened lemonade, however, as other flavors may dye your dishwasher colors. Any clean, airtight container works to store your detergent, however a clean mason jar is recommended. Be sure to clearly label the storage container. For an added inexpensive rinse aid, try adding distilled white vinegar to the rinse aid dispenser of your dishwasher.
