How to Fix Broken Links in Word

When you type a Web site URL into Microsoft Word, the program automatically creates a clickable link--a hyperlink. If you move your mouse cursor over the link, press the Ctrl button and click, your default browser will start up and open the link. At least, that's what happens if the link is a good one--that is, if it is a correct and working URL. If you typed the URL incorrectly, or if the page address changed, the link breaks, and fixing it is not a simple matter of correcting the letters you see on the page.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the broken link in your document and right-click on it.

    • 2

Select "Edit Hyperlink" from the context menu that pops up. If you simply want to remove the link, select "Remove Hyperlink" instead. The Edit Hyperlink dialog box will open.

    • 3

Type or paste the full correct link in the box labeled "Address." Include "http://" if applicable--anything that appears in the address bar of your browser when the correct page loads.

    • 4

Type the text you want to appear hyperlinked in the document, in the "Text to display" field. The text does not have to be the URL--it can describe the URL instead. If the text is already correct, leave it as is. Click "OK" to return to the document.
