How to (Properly) Dispose of an Old Computer

Don't throw your old computer out, someone may be able to use it.

Computers contain a variety of contaminants that shouldn't find their way to a landfill due to toxicity risks. In some states, placing a computer in a landfill is prohibited by law. Numerous computer parts, including some chemical compounds, metals and plastics, are recyclable. To properly dispose of your old computer, select a recycling method from the available options, including manufacturer-sponsored recycling.

Instructions

1. Check your manufacturer's website to find out about recycling programs. For example, Gateway offers a trade-in program that offers cash for old computers. If your computer isn't worth anything, Gateway will ship and recycle the computer for free.

2. Call your local computer sales stores and ask about recycling programs. Best Buy and Staples offer computer recycling. Best Buy accepts Gateway or eMachines brands for recycling, while Staples recycles Dell computers.

3. Call your local school, church or charitable organization and ask if the organization will accept an old computer as a donation. If the technology is outdated, someone may be able to use the machine to access email and search for a job.
