Learn where the textbook is offered. In order to view and read textbooks online, you need to know where it is available in digital form. Many books are accessible for download through public libraries and schools, while others are only offered by vendors such as Amazon, Barnes & Nobles and MBS Direct.

Find out the format. There are numerous types of digital formats used in publishing ebooks. These will tell you what type of reading devices they require. If you are trying to access a text through public libraries, their websites will most likely tell you what the format is as well as offer you a download link for the necessary software. Amazon has made its reader for PCs available for free download. However, Kindle reader cannot view most library formats. If the website you get your electronic textbook from does not tell you, look at the file extension. These are the last three letters found at the end of a saved document name. Two common file extensions are .doc and .pdf. You can then refer to a list of file extensions at websites such as Net Lingo.

Know your connectivity. Most ebooks require you to have some type of internet connection at a minimum. Your electronic textbook will most likely be stored in a file at the location you obtained it from. This means either your public library or Amazon account, which you can access from any computer connection including dialup. However, if you have chosen a format for wireless connection, you may view your book where you receive a wireless signal through synchronization software. This software allows you to synchronize the data on your wireless devices with your personal computer so that whatever files you have on your computer are automatically updated to your wireless devices. Amazon's Whisper synchronization even keeps track of your pages as you switch between devices. However, you must have a wireless connection to read it.
