How to Use Glaze to Darken Cabinet Doors
Give cabinet doors an antique and aged look with chocolate brown or dark umber glaze. The glaze ages stained cabinets as well as painted cabinets. Once applied the glaze sits within the decorative grooves and paneling of the cabinets, giving the overall cabinetry a slightly darkened look and feel. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Remove all the cabinet doors and drawers and lay on a clean, dust-free drop cloth or plastic sheeting. Wipe clean with a damp sponge to remove dirt, grease and dust. Take off all knobs and handles and place in a small plastic bag or storage container.

2
Use a sanding sponge and lightly sand the cabinetry surface to give extra adhesion to the glaze. Move your sander in the direction of visible wood grain. Wipe with a tack cloth or damp sponge to remove dust and allow cabinetry to dry.

Paint the cabinets if a color change is desired or leave as is. Apply latex satin paint using a mini roller and trim brush. Be prepared to apply two coats of paint with two to four hours drying time between coats. Don't forget to paint both sides of cabinet doors.

Mix together one part dark umber paint and four parts glaze in a gallon bucket. Stir to create a glaze mixture. Apply the glaze to the cabinets with a chip brush. Cover one entire section of cabinetry at a time---for example, complete one door or drawer. Wipe off the glaze with a clean terry towel. The glaze will settle in the grooves and molding of the cabinetry as well as darken any flat surfaces. Allow the glaze to dry for 24 hours.

Reattach door and drawers to the cabinetry base. Replace knobs and handles. Do not clean cabinetry for 30 days, allowing paint and glaze to properly dry and cure.
