How to Create a School Brochure

Perhaps you are an administrator or staff member trying to create a brochure to highlight the philosophical approach of the institute; or, you need to create an overview of the extracurricular programs available at your school. Whatever your specific purpose is for making an informative brochure, there are tools and software available to help you with the task.

Instructions

First, create a rough template for your brochure using a sketchbook or notebook and colored pencils. Then, create a list of the information you want to include on your brochure. It is important to add any descriptions or other text you plan to highlight to ensure there will be enough space on your brochure to include all desired elements.

Choose a style for your brochure and decide whether you want to create a themed template. For example, you may design a brochure which highlights the music department, staff and the types of equipments students will have access to if they attend your school. Or, you want to create a photo montage of moments at your school to give out at a PTA meeting.

Select a computer graphics program to design your school brochure. You may have access to a program like Photoshop at your school or office but, if not, you can download the free program GIMP that functions in many ways like Photoshop.

    • 4

Open a new document in the program by selecting "File" and "New." Set the dimensions of your document in line with a standard size brochure paper (11- x 8.5-inch works well, especially for a tri-fold brochure).

Choose a background, white usually being the most readable. Select a resolution setting next, normally at least 300 pixels for a quality printing outcome. Keep in mind that if you are creating a two-sided brochure you will have to create two documents, one for each side of your brochure.

Bring in any external graphics including photos or other graphics to enhance your design. You do this by selecting "File" and the "Open." Browse to the images and photos you want to add to the brochure and open them. Then use the "Copy" and "Paste" function under "Edit" to place the images in the brochure document. Remember to only use images or graphics from public domain, meaning that they are free to use and have no trademark or copyright issues associated with their usage. Each element you bring in will automatically being placed on a layer. As you create your text or other graphics such as drawings, place each of these elements on its own layer as well. This makes editing each element much easier. Choose a font style that works best with your theme and the images you are incorporating within your brochures design.

Save your final design for your brochure as a high resolution JPEG. You can print your brochure through a professional print service, or can print from your own desktop but will need to purchase brochure printing paper from an office supply store or other retailer.
