How to Build Raised Planter Beds

Raised garden planter beds are additions to a garden that create a distinctive look for your flower beds and landscaping. The tools you need to build a raised planter bed can be found at any hardware store or garden center--and the skills you need to successfully create and utilize your raised beds are minimal. Raised beds are an excellent solution for gardeners who have mobility limitations.

Things You'll Need

• Measuring tape
• Shovel
• Aerator
• Stakes
• Concrete blocks
• Topsoil
• Compost
• Plants
• Mulch
• Water

Instructions

1. Measure out the area you want for your raised beds. Mark the corners with spikes or stakes.

2. Dig out 1 to 2 inches of soil from the area you have chosen for your raised planter beds. Aerate the soil.

3. Place concrete gardening bricks along the perimeter of your raised garden bed. Stack the bricks evenly to form a 3- to 6-inch-high wall around the perimeter.

4. Fill the bed with 6 to 10 inches of topsoil. Spread the soil evenly throughout the raised bed with a rake.

5. Plant flowers and shrubs of your choice in your raised flower bed. Put mulch down to secure and protect your plants. Water thoroughly.
