How to Delete Windows Messenger History

Privacy is a constant concern while you use the Internet, particularly if you are using a public computer to chat online with programs such as Windows Live Messenger (previously known as MSN Messenger). Whether your chats are related to business or personal topics, it is likely that you do not want others to read your chat logs when you are finished. Delete your history on Windows Live Messenger to ensure that your privacy is protected.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Windows Live Messenger and log in.

    • 2

Click the "Show Menu" icon in the upper-right corner of the window.

    • 3

      Click "Tools," then click "Options."

    • 4

      Click the "Messages" tab.

    • 5

Click inside the box labeled "Save my conversations in this folder," and use the mouse to highlight all of the text in the box.

    • 6

Right-click on the highlighted text and click "Copy."

    • 7

Click "Start," then click "Computer" in Windows Vista and 7 or "My Computer" in Windows XP.

    • 8

Right-click in the "Address" bar at the top of the window, then click "Paste" and press "Enter." This brings you directly to the folder where each history file for Windows Live Messenger is stored.

    • 9

Delete every file in the folder, then empty the Recycle Bin. You have now removed the Windows Live Messenger history from your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • To prevent future messages from being saved, remove the checkmark from the box labeled "Automatically keep a history of my conversations" in the "Messages" tab of the Windows Live Messenger "Options" screen.
