How to Change the CPU in a Sony Laptop

Changing components on a laptop computer is generally considered more difficult than on a desktop PC. However, follow these instructions and you will be able to accomplish the difficult task of changing your Sony laptop's processor.

Consult your computer's instruction manual on how to remove the faceplate and keyboard. Your faceplate will usually be attached by several plastic hinges, remove these with care.

Remove the keyboard from your Sony laptop by removing the four or more screws located at the corners. Make sure all the screws are out when removing the keyboard, and if you meet resistance, take another look and make sure you did not miss one.

Consult your manual for correct instructions on removing the display from your Sony laptop computer. This will usually be accomplished by removing several small screws near the base of your display. Make sure you unplug the video and Wi-Fi cables when removing your display to ensure they are not damaged.

Remove the screws and take off the outer shell of your laptop. You will now be able to see your laptop's components.

Remove your laptop's heat sink by removing the four screws that secure it to the processor. You should now be able to see your processor.

Remove the processor's locking screws by turning them clockwise, then remove your old processor from its socket.

Insert your new processor and apply thermal paste to its surface. Make sure your processor is fully secured in its socket.

Re-assemble your laptop and turn it on, your new processor is now installed.
