How to Seal a Granulated Wax Candle

Granulate wax is paraffin wax that has been formed into tiny grains. The small wax grains can be used to melt into a candle, or they can be used in a container to make an unusual candle with a grainy texture. A granulated wax candle has a much different appearance than a candle that is a solid piece of wax, but it needs to have a sealed top surface. This is done by melting the top surface of the granulated wax to seal in the rest of the wax granules.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour wax granules into a candle container. Glass is generally used for container candles because wood is flammable and metal would become too hot when the candle is melted.

    • 2

Place a primed wick into the center of the wax granules. A primed wick is one that is coated with wax to make it easier to light. The ideal wick for a granule candle is one that has a rigid core, such as a paper core or zinc core. A rigid wick will stand up better among the wax grains than one without a rigid core.

    • 3

Put a piece of paper across the top of the wax granules. Depending on the shape of the candle container and the depth of the wax, the paper may need to be cut to fit across the granules.

    • 4

Iron the paper. On a low setting, the heat from the iron will melt the top portion of the granulated candle, making it form a seal across the top of the candle. This will keep the rest of the wax from escaping the container, no matter how the candle is handled. If the candle container is very small, the tip of the iron may be the only portion of it that will fit across the top of the wax.
