How to Paste a Paragraph Beside Another in a Word Document

Save

Copying and pasting in a Word document is an essential tool when writing in electronic format. To copy and paste paragraphs side by side requires a change in page format to columns. Once you learn the basic copy and paste commands, you will be better equipped to quickly create various documents in Word.

Things You'll Need

  • Microsoft Office 2007 software

Using Columns

  • Turn your computer on and allow it to boot up.

  • Open Microsoft Office software, choose "Word" and open it.

  • Type your paragraphs. Use the "Return" key to separate the paragraphs.

  • Open another document in Word. Under "Page Layout" in the toolbar, choose "Columns." A window will appear in which you can choose the number of columns you want--pick at least two.

  • Return to your first document. Highlight your first paragraph, and hit the "Ctrl" and "C" buttons simultaneously. This is a shortcut to copying highlighted text. If you are working on a Macintosh computer, hit the "Apple" key and "C" at the same time.

  • Switch over to the document that you formatted into columns. Make sure the cursor is blinking on the page. Hit the "Ctrl" and "V" buttons simultaneously. This is the shortcut for paste. Your copied paragraph will appear on the page.

  • Hit the return button until the cursor moves all the way down the page and returns to the top. This is the beginning of your second column.

  • Switch to your page with paragraphs. Highlight the second paragraph and use the aforementioned shortcut to copy it. On the column page, make sure your cursor is blinking at the top next to the paragraph you just pasted there. Use the shortcut for paste (for Mac it is "Apple" + "V"). Your second paragraph should appear to the right of the first so now your paragraphs are side by side.
