How to Set Up Yahoo on Mozilla Thunderbird

Thunderbird is a free email client program provided by Mozilla, the maker of the Firefox Web browser. If you have tried Mozilla and liked it, you might decide that you would like to try using Thunderbird with your POP-enabled Yahoo! email account. For some popular email providers such as Yahoo!, Thunderbird is able to detect many of the required settings automatically. Configure Thunderbird to access your Yahoo! mail to see if you prefer it over your current email client.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Thunderbird. Click "Tools," then click "Account Settings."

    • 2

Click the "Account Actions" button at the bottom of the window, then click "Add Mail Account."

    • 3

Type your display name in the "Your name" box. This is the name that will be displayed to others on the mail that you send.

    • 4

Type your full Yahoo! email address in the "Email address" box, then type your password in the box immediately below it.

    • 5

Click the "Remember password" box if you would like to have Thunderbird log in to your email account automatically when the application is launched.

    • 6

Click "Continue." Thunderbird detects the server settings for the Yahoo! email account automatically.

    • 7

Click the "Create Account" button to finalize the account.

Tips & Warnings

  • To access your Yahoo! mail via an email client, POP email access must be enabled on your Yahoo! account. This requires a subscription to Yahoo! Mail Plus, which costs $19.99 per year as of 2010.
