You love your Bose music system. The audio system fits in just right into your home or business. You have been wondering if you can connect external speakers to your Bose music system so you can increase the range of the audio. Yes—you can connect speakers to your Bose music system. The device has jacks for external speakers. You don't have to open the system's case or buy a hard-to-find cable to complete the connection.

Things You'll Need

  • Two speakers with composite audio jacks (RCA) or composite audio cables attached (one red or black cable and one white cable)
  • Turn off the Bose music system. Unplug the device's power cable from the electrical outlet.

  • Turn the Bose music system around so the back of the device is facing you.

  • Locate the “Variable Out” jacks on the back of the device.

  • Plug the end of the red or black composite audio cable coming from the speaker into the “R” jack on the back of the Bose music system. The cable may be labeled "Right" or have similar wording.

If your speaker doesn't have a composite audio cable attached to it but there is a composite audio jack (RCA), plug one end of a red or black composite audio cable into the “R” jack of the speaker and the other end of the red or black composite cable into the “R” jack on the back of the Bose music system.

  • Plug the end of the white composite audio cable coming from the speaker into the “L” jack on the back of the Bose music system. The cable may be labeled "Left" or have similar wording.

If your speaker doesn't have a composite audio cable attached to it, but there is a composite audio jack (RCA), plug one end of a white composite audio cable into the “L” jack of the speaker and the other end of the white composite cable into the “L” jack on the back of the Bose music system.

  • Arrange the speakers close to your Bose music system.

  • Turn the Bose music system around so the display is facing you. Plug in the device.

  • Power on the Bose music system. You should have audio coming out of the external speakers. You will not hear audio coming from the built-in speakers on your Bose music system. This audio is shut off when you connect external speakers.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your speakers don't contain composite audio jacks or cables, but wires that must be inserted into a clip-like device on the back of a stereo, you will need to convert these wires to a composite connection. Electronic, hardware and home-improvement stores carry the supplies needed to convert your speaker wires to composite (RCA) jacks.
