How to Save Photos in PDF Format From Windows

Turning photos into PDFs (Portable Document Format files) is a useful and relatively easy procedure. Once turned into a PDF, your files become essentially unchangeable and your documents seem more professional. All it takes is a simple download, installation and a click of a button.

The first step is the most complicated, and it involves a choice. You have to download a PDF "printer." There are many to choose from, and more are popping up all the time. However, there are some tried-and-true choices out there, and, depending on your needs, one of the programs following steps should do the job (see links in Resources below).

Cute PDF Writer: Cute PDF has been on the market for years, and it certainly does the job for anyone who wants the conversion to be fast and simple. It doesn't have a million options, but most users don't need them.

PDFill Printer - PDFill is a step up from Cute PDF, but it essentially does the same thing. For $20, you can even open up PDFs to edit them, but the free download will still do the "print" conversion.

Bullzip PDF Printer: Bullzip is probably the most complete fee printer on the market. It allows a lot of useful options in one simple download. It has an intuitive GUI (graphical user interface) that allows for features such as password-protecting the document, watermarks and different file-type outputs, including JPG, BMP, TIFF and PNG.

What they all have in common is that once downloaded, you then have to load them as printers. To do that, each has an installer (.exe) that does all the work. You run (double-click) the installer, follow the installation directions (usually means clicking "Next" a few times), and then you're all set.

Basically, the installation loads the software as a sort of "virtual printer." So when you open a file and choose "Print" from the "File" menu, you can choose the PDF "printer" from the print options. Once you choose the printer from the menu and click "Print," the program then prompts you for the location of the new PDF file, and you're finished.

Tips & Warnings

  • This is one of the simplest and most useful conversions that also happens to be free. CutePDF is the easiest, and for most users, it would be the recommendation. For those out there who want a little more "tweak-ability," the others would probably be best.
