How to Replace an HP Laptop Screen

Save

If the display on your laptop has failed, you will need to attach the unit to a docking station or external monitor to use it, which will severely limit the usefulness of the unit. You could take the laptop to a repair center to have the display replaced, but the price of the repair could be nearly as much as the price of buying a new laptop. If you can do the repair yourself, you can save yourself a lot of money and get your laptop back in service.

Things You'll Need

  • Small flat head screwdriver
  • Small Phillips head screwdriver
  • Turn off your HP laptop and remove the AC power cord. Flip the laptop over and slide the release lever to loosen and remove the battery. Pull the battery out of the case.

  • Remove the keyboard cover by taking out the retaining screws and using a small flat head screwdriver to pry it loose, starting with the right-hand side, then the middle and finally the left side.

  • Remove the retaining screws from the rear panel of the laptop, remove the screws that hold the laptop antenna in place and set the antenna to the side of the laptop.

  • Remove the laptop's display adapter cable from the motherboard, and then remove the retaining screws that hold the display assembly to the top of the laptop case. Carefully lift the display assembly free of the laptop case.

  • Carefully set the new laptop display in place. Replace the retaining screws that hold the display in place, and then connect the display adapter cable to the motherboard. Reassemble the case, and turn the laptop on to test the display.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to ground yourself before working on your laptop. You can wear a grounding strap on your wrist or touch something metal before you begin. It is also a good idea to avoid working in a room with carpeted floors.
